Water tower cleaning

Dirt, scale, bacteria and legionella can compromise the cooling tower. Its cleaning therefore has significant impacts on the operation, energy, as well as the structural integrity of the system.

Legionellosis

What is Legionellosis?

Legionellosis is a disease caused by a bacteria called Legionella. There are two forms of legionellosis: a mild form and a more severe form. The mild form of legionellosis is called Pontiac fever. It is characterized by symptoms that resemble those of the flu. It usually starts 1 to 2 days after exposure to the bacteria and usually takes 2 to 5 days to heal, without requiring treatment in most cases. The most serious form of legionellosis is called Legionnaires’ disease. It is characterized by a lung infection, pneumonia. It usually starts 2 to 10 days after exposure to the bacteria.

Legionellosis and water cooling towers

Although legionellosis can be found in different environments (e.g. water heaters, spas, fountains, water parks, etc.), water cooling towers appear to be the source of contamination most often involved during large-scale outbreaks. Improper maintenance of cooling systems can lead to serious health consequences and even death.

Strict regulations and severe penalties

Following multiple outbreaks of Legionnellosis related to the poor maintenance of water towers, the government of Quebec, among others, has introduced strict sanitary regulations. Under the building Act, any breach of the obligations under the regulations is liable to a fine of $ 5 290 to $ 26 450 for an individual and from $ 15 871 to $ 79 351 for a company. In case of recidivism, these fines almost double. It is therefore strongly recommended to provide for an annual washing of the water cooling tower.
